Corporate Health Ireland can advise and support you in the implementation of an occupational health programme that will meet your business needs.

There are various types of medical assessments used depending on the stage of employment and the issue at hand.

Pre-placement Health Screenings (Pre-employment):

This screening is to assess that your potential employee is fit and healthy to do the job, to ensure that they can work safely without causing damage to their health or to that of other employees. It also establishes a baseline against which future health changes can be compared. We will make recommendations regarding  any work modifications required to enable the employee perform the job safely and effectively.

This assessment can be done by online pre-employment assessment forms or attending one of our clinics for a full medical assessment.

Pre-placement medical screening should not delay the recruitment process and appointments are generally provided within two working days of a request with rapid turnaround of results.

Occupational Health Assessments:

We carry out medical lead assessments of employees’ fitness in relation to work. These assessments are carried out in one of our clinic locations.  Once these assessments are completed you will be furnished with a written report advising management of the employees’ fitness to work.  Assessments of medical fitness to be at work

  • Assessment of medical fitness to return to work following illness or absence
  • Assessments where work may be causing health problems or health may be interfering with work
  • Ill health retirement assessments
  • Fitness for other work related activity, for example: Emergency Response Team, Confined Spaces etc.

Absence Management: (Case Management)

Long-term sickness absence is not good for anyone. Successful management of sickness absence in the workplace can contribute significantly to overall business productivity.

It is recognised that a proactive approach to absence management focusing on early intervention has been proven to have positive benefits for both employees and management. The sooner action is taken, the better the chances are of an employee making a full and speedy return to work. It has been estimated that making an early intervention could reduce sickness absence by as much as 40%. (Fit for Work)

Absenteeism can be managed and reduced through appropriate sickness and absence policies and procedures, training and support for line managers, return to work interviews, absence reviews, and the use of trigger systems.  Having a clear sick leave policy and absence management procedure is an essential feature of every successful organisation.

Corporate Health Ireland can help you in developing and implementing your sick leave and absence management policies, as well as providing drug and alcohol testing, training and support of line managers in dealing with absence.

We can provide nurse case managers to optimise a speedy return to work when appropriate.

The report will assist you as a manager by advising on issues such as:

  • Current fitness status
  • Return to work date
  • Likely length of ongoing absence
  • Whether or not future absences can be anticipated due to health issues
  • If work accommodations or restrictions are required and for what period of time
  • Whether the employee has a medical condition that might impact on ability to give reasonable attendance and effective service in the future.

Health Surveillance and Biological Monitoring:

Health surveillance allows for early identification of ill health and helps identify any corrective action needed. Health surveillance may be required by law if your employees are exposed to noise or vibration, solvents, fumes, dusts, biological agents and other substances hazardous to health, night workers.

Health surveillance is important for:

  • detecting ill-health effects at an early stage, so employers can introduce better controls to prevent them getting worse
  • providing data to help employers evaluate health risks
  • enabling employees to raise concerns about how work affects their health
  • highlighting lapses in workplace control measures, therefore providing invaluable feedback to the risk assessment
  • providing an opportunity to reinforce training and education of employees (e.g. on the impact of health effects and the use of protective equipment)

Corporate Health Ireland can:

  • Advise you on a suitable health surveillance programme for your employees
  • Set up the programme
  • Provide the necessary training and supervision for your staff if they are going to help with the basic health surveillance
  • Provide suitably qualified and experienced staff to carry out the higher-level health surveillance
  • Arrange for health surveillance to be performed on site or at our offices depending on your particular needs. Provide you with reports on your employees’ fitness to continue work
  • Our advances software allows for the generation of group analysis of results allowing for early identification of trends

The assessment consists of some of all of the following items depending on the specific job demands:

  • Health questionnaire
  • Physical examination
  • Hearing conservation programmes
  • Vision screening/Colour vision
  • Assessment of functional capacity
  • Drugs of abuse screening
  • Respiratory surveillance that includes Spirometry (lung function test)
  • Blood screening
  • Immunisation/vaccination as required for specific categories of workers considered at risk of infectious disease.
  • Night worker assessment

Risk assessment should be used to identify any need for health surveillance.  Health surveillance should not be a substitute for undertaking a risk assessment or using effective controls.

Occupational Vaccination and Travel Health Advice:

Many jobs (including those associated with healthcare) can bring employees into close contact with a range of different infections and diseases.

Vaccinations can provide protection against some of these and also prevent disease transmission to other people.

Employers have a legal duty to protect the health of their staff and must assess the risk of infection.  When a risk has been identified, an employer must take suitable precautions to protect the health of the employee.

Some businesses also require their employees to travel worldwide for business needs and employees may require vaccinations determined by the risk identified by that country or region. There may also be visa requirement(s) to travel which Corporate Health Ireland can assist you in.

Corporate Health Ireland can assist you in assessing the need for immunisations and vaccinations and identify a suitable programme for employees
